Isi artikelMatha Nussbaum's new book, The Therapy of Desire, is an attempt to come to grips with some of the most important issues discussed by the Hellenistic philosophers and to instill in readers (particularly nonspecialists) not only an understanding of but a passionate engagement with the main ideas of this period. What she most admires in these schools is their engagement with the world: their "conception of philisophy as a way of addressing the most painful problems of human life" (p. 3) and their nonelitist attempt to "offer something to each and every human being, regardless of class or status or gender" (p. 10). Her central topic is the passions-particularly the fear of death, anger, and erotic love-and although in the end she rejects their critique of these states, she tries to convince us that they had powerful insights into the nature of such emotions and the values that they typically express.
