Isi artikelThis issue of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy provides an opportunity to re¯ect on how molecular genetics will transform medicine in the twenty-®rst century. In particular, it explores the epistemological and value assumptions and claims involved in how we know and seek to manipulate genetically-based traits in the context of medicine. Much in the debate turns on how we understand normality and abnormality, bene®ts and burdens, and morality and immorality. Depending on how such distinctions are drawn, individuals will be regarded as diseased or healthy, and the investment of health care resources will be seen as indicated or unnecessary. The interest in drawing distinctions between the various judgments that we bring to the debates will be enhanced by a better understanding of the genetics of human variation and individuality and the increased capacity to make better predictions regarding long-term health outcomes as one is able to associate them with genetic markers. Molecular genetics will likely lead to a revolution in preventive medicine, which can be responsibly directed only by thoughtful consideration of the epistemological, value, and cost implications of different ways of viewing boundaries between permissible and impermissble intervention.
