Liberal theorits often use Mozert v. Hawkins County Board of Education to demonstrate that there are times when a liberal state needs to put its foot down, for example, join the Sixth Circuit Court in arguing that the United States's commitment to civic education justifies compelling some minority groups such as Christian Fundamentalists to read what their religions deem objectionable texts. I do not want to challenge this claim that liberal states can legitimately require civic education. But I would like to raise a question about what seems to be an assumption that Gutmann and Macedo share: that civic education necessarily means adherence to a particular liberal-democratic curriculum. As the recent literature on education theory emphasizes, education of any sort occurs not only through a pedagogy to foster civic virtues instead of imposing controversial curricula. Doing so will allow theorists such as Guttman and Macedo to be more liberal about the wishes and beliefs of fundamentalists and still meet the requirements of civic education within a liberal-democratic regime.
