Isi artikelAge disrimination is often supposed unjust. To many it seem indefensible that employment opportunities or health resources should be distributed, even in part, simply on the basis of age; indeed in some jurisdictions some forms of age disrimination are prohibited by law. Yet the alleged injustice of age discrimination- the argument from equalizing benefits-seems not apply in the case of age. My primary aim in this article is to try make sense of -to make intelligible-the intuition that age discrimination is unjust. I understand making sense of the intuition to require (in the context) the uncovering of an argument, or arguments, which may reasonably be thought to support the view endorsed by the intuition. To this end I examine two arguments for the general claim that age discrimination is unjust. I begin with arguments from equalizing benefits, suggesting that this argument fails to explain why age discrimination is unjust and probably fails to account for the intuition. I then consider an alternative account which I take to offer both more solid support for the view and a better explanation of the intuition. I end with a brief consideration of veneration-the practice of showing respect for the aged-and ask whether age is an intelligible basis for respect.
