Isi artikelThis issue of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy takes up an infrequent topic: patient responsibility. Much early work in medical ethics focused on the responsibilities of physicians1; later bioethics broadened the scope to consider health professionals more generally. Focus always has been placed on obligations to patients and the importance of the relationship between patients and health professionals. More recently, work in organizational ethics has addressed the responsibilities of health care organizations to patients. Yet very little attention has been paid to the patient end of patientphysician, patient-health care professional, or patient-health care organization relationships. Do patients have particular moral responsibilities as patients? What are they? To what extent may they be held accountable for fulfilling those responsibilities, and how? These are among the questions considered in this issue.
