Isi artikel
Thomas Hurka's Perfectionism is "a study of narrow perfectionism.. A descriptive account of the best perfectionism is the book's central aim" (p.4). Perfectionism is tell us to perfect human excellence. Hurka's perfectionism is narrow in that it understands the human excellence to be perfected just in terms of human nature. Broad perfectionism holds that various human capacities and faculties are-also or instead-to be perfected. I agree with Hurka that perfectionism ia an important and indeed fascinating sort of ethical theory-one that has recently not been taken all that seriously and certainly not well developed. But, for reason I will give, I do not think Hurka does well by perfectionism. Indeed, I was very unhappy about much of the first two-thirds of Hurka's book, although I was very moved and impressed by the last third. But perhaps unhappiness shows why Hurka's book may be both right and important.
