This article is about the relationship between two kinds of express, firm commitment: the practical and theoretical. It begins by revising a neglected controversy about whether promises properly so called must pertain to possible future actions of promisors, so that uses of the verb " to promise" which do not commit the utterer to behave in the promised manner must be assigned to a philosopher of law Patrick Atiyah maintained in writings from the 1970s and 1980s that no such philosophico-grammatical legislation is warranted.
