Isi artikel
Egalitarianism is powerfully repsented in recent moral and political philosophy, John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, and Thomas Nagel have defended views that count as egalitarian. An egalitarian theory mightb be based on appeal to equality itself as a moral ideal. In this article I consider views that call for subtantive equality in the conditions of people's lives: not just political equality, or equality of in the sense of having the same set of basic rights, but equality with respect to the opportunities open to them, or the resources available to them, or on the quality of their lives themselves. For the issues I discuss it is not necessary to decide in which of these ways (or in some other way) our assume that the view requires equality in the quality of lives, and that the quality of a person's life is a matter of that person's level welfare or well-being.
