Isi artikelWe all have many identities. Some voluntarily adopted, some unconsciously internalized, others socially ascribed, indeed, sometimes imposed. Who we are, who we think we are, and who others think we are can come to matter very deeply in a world in which the headings under which we are understood can have important social and economic consequences. We are discriminated against under certain headings, and to achieve justice and equality, we may sometimes have to organize politically under those same headings. Hence, identity politics. “Black Pride,” “Gay Pride,” “Deaf Pride,” and so on have emerged as transvaluations of denigrated minority positions, as part of a process of achieving recognition and, ultimately, equal treatment. Morris Kaplan calls for “sexual justice” for lesbians and gays and, more generally, queers.
