Isi artikelSomeone whose accomplishments are in fact quite modest may neverthless be loud in her own praise, never losing achance to tell others of what she has done (modest though her achievement actually is). Likewise, someone who has accomplished great things might nevertheless be quite modest about what she has achieved. So we need to distinguish the sense of 'modest' in which one can be modest about such things. Only in the second sense, in which one can be modest about something (perhaps oneself), is modesty a character trait that wight be a virtue. But to decide whether it is, we need to answer a prior quetion: what exactly is this sort of modesty?
