Isi artikelMany political philosophers believe that we can a range of special obligations to our compatriots. There is considerable disagreement about the best way to justify these obligations, however. Some argue that they derive from general moral principles, while others maintain that they have a more immediate basis in the relationships themselves. I shall question the idea that all these special obligations can be grounded in general moral principles, but I shall also argue that the most alternative, which seeks to generate them from constitutive attachements alone, suffers from grave problems. Drawing an analogy with some remarks made by Joseph Raz in the context of discussion of friendship, I shall contend that the most promising account derives at least some of these special obligations from the intrisic value of citizenship, and conceives them as part of the good of that relationship.
