Japanese politics is currently caught up in a struggle for power. The opposition Democratic Party of Japan, headed by Ozawa Ichiro, has seized the lead in the House of Councillors, the upper house of the National Diet, thereby gaining the ability to paralyze the administration dominated by the Liberal Democratic Party, and it is now aiming to win control of the government for itself.
