Oda Makoto: Has Japanese finance changed over te last ten years or so? Gomi Hirofumi: It's changed greatly. Banks have cleared away their nonperforming loans and are vigorously competing to offer high-level risk management and financial products. They have also made progress in institutional liberalization, and not just in the area of asset management. Now that their corporate customers have more options for raising funds, the old main-bank system, in which each company relied heavily on its main bank as a source of funding, is becoming a thing of the past.
