Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the extent of equivalence between Indonesian and English functional connectives in terms of their lexicogrammatical and semantic features. The problems of this study were divided into main problem, that were: to what extent are lexicogrammatical and semantic features of Indonesian functional connectives equivalent to that of English in terms of similarity, partial similarity, dissimilarity and zero equivalence?; and sub-problems: 1) what are Indonesian and English functional connectives as discussed in grammar books of both languages?; 2) what are Indonesian and English functional connectives identified in bilingual editions of The Bum Quartet, Bumi Manusia-This Earth of Mankind? 3) are Indonesian sentences using functional connectives in Bumi Manusia-This Earth of Mankind equivalently translated in terms of syndeton, asyndeton, and polysyndeton? The sources of data were Indonesian and English grammar books and Indonesian novel of Bumi Manusia and its English version This Earth of Mankind as the analyses were carried on the basis of referable grammar-book-based and corpus-based data. The grammar-book-based and corpus-based data showed different results as corpus-based data showed higher equivalence extent of FCs between the two languages both in terms of lexicogrammatical features and semantic features than that of grammar-book-based, data. Of grammar-book-based data, the extent of equivalence was 52.33 % in terms of function with adjunct-into-adjunct as the most contributing trend; 58.14 % of position with the most contributing trend of initial/final into initial/ final; 0% of controlling words/phrases; 63.95 % in terms of primary/secondary meanings with the most contributing trend is secondary into secondary; 70.93 % of meaning relationship the most contributing trend to which is concessive and contingency into concessive and contingency; and 0 % of replace ability. Of corpus, the extent of equivalence was 87.12 % in terms of function with the most contributing trend was adjunct-into-adjunct; 87.46 % of position the most contributing trend to which is final-into-final; 11.36 % of controlling words/phrases; 89.49 % in terms of primary/secondary meanings with secondary-into-secondary trend as the most contributing one; 85.43 % of meaning relationship the most contributing trend to which is Complementation the Meaning of Noun into Complementation the Meaning of Noun; and 0% of replace ability. Of grammar books and corpus, the Indonesian FC which have the most various English counterparts was yang. Of corpus, syndetic, asyndetic, and polysyndetic cases of Indonesian, in general, were 61.17 % equivalent to that of English and 38.83 % unequivalent Syndeton into syndeton was the case mostly occurring and contributing to the equivalence and the most contributing case to the non-equivalence was syndeton into polysyndeton.
