Isi artikelWork assignments and other personnel decisions based on a faculty member's reliable record of either truly advancing knowledge or not could improve the process of allocating faculty time to unfunded research and allow for more teaching by those who have not established a record of advancing knowledge. This study reports survey results which indicate that most faculty consider publications in leading journals and the publication of a critically - acclaimed, Ph. D - level textbook to be the primary sources for advancing knowledge in a discipline with all other indicators of very limited importance. It is proposed that the more limited and rigorous criteria should drive staffing decisions to enhance the research mission of the university and increase productivity, effectiveness and efficiencies.
