The greatest luck of a writer is to have good critics, and the better his critics the greater his luck. I am grateful, not only to all the scholars who participated in the conference about my book, Sovereign Virtue, in London in 2001, but to those who for over two decades have noticed and criticized the opinions and arguments finally collected in that book. This issue of Ethics allows me to respond to some of the latter scholars as well as the former, and though most of what follows is addressed to the papers printed in the issue, I include some comments on past criticism in this journal as well.’ The response is organized around issues, not commentators, and my replies to certain commentators are spread over several sections.
