Isi artikel
Since Rawls’s influential work, equality and responsibility have become two pillars of theories of justice. These two principles are somewhat antagonistic and typically limit each other. The extent of individual responsibility delineates the boundary of warranted equalization. But more than extent, there is an issue of content. Individual responsibility can be ascribed to preinstitutional facts such as past choices, or it can be embodied in institutional spheres of freedom. The theories of equality of opportunity and the theories of equality of resources have fallen apart on this divide. Correspondingly, they propose to equalize different objects. Because they require individuals to assume responsibility for their life goals, theories of equality of resources (among which Rawls’s is one) advocate equalizing the material means which help individuals realize their goals. Dworkin made a remarkable attempt at articulating such a theory with a thorough attention to the difficulties in defining such means and measuring them in an interpersonally comparable way.
