Isi artikelIn a memorable pair of papers originally published two decades ago, Ronald Dworkin powerfully criticized various forms of welfare egalitarianism and then defended his own version of resource egalitarianism, termed equality of resources.’ Over the years, a number of critics have argued, or implied, that Dworkin’s exploration of the distinction between these two varieties of egalitarianism was incomplete. Despite their disagreements with Dworkin, many of those critics worked within the same basic framework. Thus, they claimed there are plausible welfarist principles that his original articles failed to consider or refute, or they defended resourcist principles that depart, in certain respects, from equality of resources.2 Other critics, however, argued that egalitanans should focus upon considerations distinct from either welfare or resources.
