Abstract
The study is concerned with an assessment of the effectiveness of English teaching materials used at the Faculty of Engineering, Pakuan University, Bogor. The study has three objectives, namely: (1) finding out the strengths or weaknesses of the coursebook; (2) finding out the content words of reading passages; and (3) finding out the text readability of the reading passages. The findings of the three parts of the study were analyzed by using two theoretical frameworks.
The theoretical frameworks used in the study were: (1) the criteria for the coursebook selection and evaluation proposed by Cunningsworth; and (2) vocabulary assessment proposed by Read. There were two kinds of corpus data for the study. First, it was the corpus data that was extracted from the answers given by the respondents through a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire was tried out and validated. It consists of three sections each of which aims to elicit: (1) the students' personal data; (2) the students' perception on the coursebook; and (3) the students' evaluation on the coursebook. The second kind was the corpus data that was extracted from the reading passages in the coursebook. These data were used to analyze two things, namely: (1) the content words by classifying the words into high-frequency, low-frequency, specialized, and sub-technical words; and (2) the texts readability of the reading passages by computing the Flesch reading ease scores. The processed data of the coursebook evaluation, the vocabulary assessment, and the questionnaire were analyzed; and the findings of study-are: (1) that the coursebook objectives do not coherent with the English program objectives; (2) that the topics of reading passages are too general; (3) that the grade levels of reading passages range from grade 2 to grade 12.
To sum up, the study shows that the coursebook is not effective for several reasons. First, the coursebook is not relevant with the English program objectives; it teaches general reading and writing skills. Second, the reading topics are not related to the students' field of study; the reading passages do not introduce the vocabulary items that are related to the students' field of study. Third, the levels of difficulty of reading passages are not in line with the students' proficiency level.
