This study analyzes the negative syntactic transfer in English compositions by Indonesian learners: a case study of ABA Pertiwi students. It aims at finding the types of interference errors, the total numbers and frequency of each type of interference errors. The data that I used as the main source is the state exam of English compositions administered in January 2000. The topic of the exam is "Women should not be expected to have careers and families at the same time. What do you think?" In collecting the data the writer has used a simple random sampling technique. This has helped him select representative units from the population. From the data gathered from these units, he has drawn inferences about the nature of the entire population. He then has generalized that what is true of the sample will be true of the population. The results of the study are as follows. After analyzing the English compositions, he has recognized and accumulated 250 interference errors. In terms of descriptive taxonomy, there are ten categories of interference errors, namely : (1) verb phrases (43%), (2) noun phrases (36.4%), (3) adjective clauses (5.6%), (4) word orders (3.2%), (5) prepositional phrases (2%), (6) adjective phrases (2%), (7) parallelism (2%), (8) transformations (1.6%), (9) noun clauses (1.2%), and (10) adverb phrases (1.2%). |
