In attempting to determine the relative role of native language influence in learners' second language phonology, few areas have received as much attention as interlanguage syllable structure. And in explaining how learners render unfamiliar second language syllables pronounceable, few proposed rules have been as prominent as cluster reduction, formalized by Eckman (1986). Theories of second language phonology based on traditional ideas of contrast, of interlanguage development, of markedness differentials, and of parameter setting all rely on the concept of a rule of duster reduction to make their analyses work. This paper examines one aspect of second language syllable structure, syllable-final clusters, in the English of a Vietnamese L1 speaker. Extending Benson's (1988) analysis, it shows how errors apparently not due to native language influence can be so attributed using the cluster reduction rule. Furthermore, it shows that the position of a reduced consonant can be largely predicted based on interaction with other rules, universal considerations, and native language syllable structure.
