Isi artikel
I cannot aspire, in one article, to convey the fullforce of the insight that came to me as I wrote the final senteces of the epigraph above. Instead I hope to clear away some of the arguments that the block the possibility of grasping it. I shall argue againts the view that such intrinsic psychological capacities as rationally and autonomy are requisites for claims of justice, a good quality of life, and the moral consideration of personhood-that is, that these capacities are the principal qualifications for mmbership in a moral community of individuals deserving equal respect and dignity. In arguing thus, I recognize that I swim against philosophical tide. But to argue otherwise is to exclude those with severe cognitive disabilities from the moral consideration of persons, and I believe this exclusion to be as morally repugnant as earlier exclusions based on sex, race, and physical ability have been.
