Over the course of the last half-century, roughly three thousand articles that discuss the work of John Rawls have been published in journals of philosophy, law, economics, political science, and related fields. While such abundance of critical discussion is a tribute to the continuing interest and importance of Rawls's work, it presents a daunting obstacle to anyone trying to find their way through the intricacies of his thought and the controversies it has generated. Thankfully, help is now at hand in the form of a five-volume collection of secondary literature edited by Henry Richardson and Paul Weithman. The Philosophy of Rawls brings together eighty-eight articles covering almost every aspect of Rawls's thought and including some of the most insightful, influential, and important articles written about his work. Each article is reproduced with its original paginal and layout, and each volume includes an introduction that puts the articles in the context of the wider discussions of which they are a part and provides references of further pieces not included in the collection. As a result of this monumental sifting of the literature, there now exists a handy starting point from which to enter into the major debates surrounding Rawls's work. In addition, it is now once again a reasonable undertaking to try to take stock of the general trends and contours of the secondary literature as a whole, to lay out a kind of overview of the results of the past thirty years of reading Rawls. After some initial remarks about the collection itself, the bulk of this review will be dedicated to providing such an overview.
