Since bill clinton's infamous comment "Well, it depends upon what you mean by the word "is". I have had numerous conversations with colleagues about whether the ex - president's comment was a leading or lagging indicator of the decline of honesty and straight forwardness in public discourse. Some colleagues believe that clinton's comment was merely symptomatic of the disregard for "straight talk" that had already been building for years, they point to george bush pere's comment "read my lips - no new taxes" as being no different or worse than bill clinton's misstatement."
