In "The possibility of Parity," Ruth Chang argues for existence of a fourth value relation,which she calls "parity."The three traditional value relations are 'better than', and equal to'. In saying of one thing that it stands in one these relations to a second thing, one is making a positive assertion about the value relations between the two: one is not merely denying that such a relation holds, as one would be doing if one merely said that A is not better tahan B. In this sense , the three traditional value relations are positive are positive value relations. An assertion of parity between two items is not merely denial that one or more of these traditional relations obtain; in this sense parity is also a positive value relation.
