Isi artikelJohn Kekes argue that a consintent application of egalitarian principles would lead absurd policies. The particular example he focused on is the inequality between men and women with respect to life expevtancy. Because egalitarians consider such inequalities to be unjustified, they should support a raft policies which would reduce or at least redress the inquality. The policies they should support include more health care for men (and less for women); the employment of more women (and less for men); in hazardous and stressful jobs; shorter working days and more leisure for men than for women; state-sponsored pleasure centers for men. Kekes argues that the absurdity of these policies casts doubt on egalitarianism itself as well as other policies usually defended in its name, such as "antipoverty programs, various welfare legislations, the preferential treatment of minorities and women, and so forth.
