Isi artikelIs the morally right action the action that a virtous person would perform? Many may think so, even that this is an uninteresting truism. The only question of consequence may seem to be whether moral philosophy does best to begin by theorizing about right actions are those of virtuous person is so far from being an uninteresting truism as to be utterly false, or so I believe. In particular, I think that it is inconsistent wit commonsense idea that we ought to become better people. If I am right, then not only is this claim about virtue and right action false, but any theory that relies on it to construct a virtue-oriented theory of right action will be unable to explain moral distinctions we regulary make regarding behavior apropriate for those who could better themselves.
