Isi artikel
Theories about the nature of well-being are as old as philosophy itself. In the western tradition stretching from the Greeks to the present day, accounts which have attracted support have invoked a wide variety of concepts: pleasure, happiness, the satisfaction of desires or prefer¬ences, the fulfillment of needs, the achievement of aims or objectives, the development of capacities or potentialities, virtue or excellence, the maintenance of normal functioning, living a form of life appropriate to one’s nature, and doubtless many others besides. Out of this formidable array how are we to locate the account which is most faithful to our ordinary concept, and our everyday experience, of welfare?
