Pernicious Anemia or Addisonian Anemia is a chronic disease that results from a deficiency of intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is a substance secreted by the parietal cells of the fundus of the stomach and intrinsic factor is necessary for the aborbtion of vitamin B12 (extrinsic factor), which takes place in the ileum. Recent evidence suggests that immunologic mechanism are responsible for the disese. Onset of the disease is insidious, systems, including the oral cavity. Therapy consists in the parenteral administration of vitamin B12.
