We have been asked to speak particularly about television and press under the general topic of Indonesian media. We decidec however to address the topic at a general level, but drawing our examples out of television and the press. I will start by discussing some of the common terms that are being mobilized within temporary media studies to understand the dramatic changes that are taking place in the media and the consequances of that in our cultural lives, whether in Indonesia or elsewhere have been dramatic indeed.
