English for Engineering Students is intended for students who want to concentrated practice in reading scientific and technical English. All of the texts are taken from publications or textbooks related with general engineering. They are not simplified for learners of English, so students will encounter in the texts exactly what students will meet in the real engineering problems. This book has three purposes for students at the beginning-level in the university or technical schools. For the first, it is to introduce students to the contents of general engineering. Secondly, it is to provide examples of the authentic texts written in the language typical of the subject. And thirdly, it is to help students to practice the skills they need in order to study the subject via English and to use it when they have learned it. Some of the words in the texts are written in either American or British English, which have some differences in spelling (e.g. Br. vapour, Am. vapor). Although they are equally acceptable, but students should avoid for mixing them in a single piece of writing. |
