Abstract
Teaching grammar has been the area of concern for many teachers in foreign language milieu. By far the teaching paradigm in this area has been typically characterized by conventional teaching which tends to focus on the mastery of grammar rules through sentential grammar exposure. As such, grammar rules are solely confined by rigid formula drawing a clear line between the right and the wrong answers. Though to some degree, sentential grammar teaching might result in students’ declarative knowledge, in light of the nature of language which is context-bound, the teaching is unlikely to help students transfer the knowledge in real language use. Accordingly, it would be of great importance to broaden the scope of teaching grammar by drawing some insights from a discoursal perspective. This study offers some insights into the teaching of grammar by revealing some distinctive features of grammar as employed in the spoken discourse. The enrichment would help students learn grammar in real spoken contexts.
