The unprecedented epizootic of avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses among birds continues to cause human disease with high mortality and to pose the threat of a pandemic. This review updates a 2005 report1 and incorporates information recently published or presented at the Second World Health Organization (WHO) Consultation on Clinical Aspects of Human Infection with Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Virus.2 Viral Ecology Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses are entrenched among poultry in parts of Asia, Africa, and perhaps the Middle East.
