Isi artikelIn the context of designing a communicative-pedagogical description of English oriented towards the needs of the syllabus designer and materials writer, this article re-examines the semantics and syntax of English comparative structures, which, it is argued, traditional reference grammars have presented in a misleading light. In particular, the paper challenges the common assumption (which can be traced back to the work of Jespersen) that the as . . . (as) construction serves to express a notion of 'equality'. An alternative analysis is proposed, based on the identification of the semantic relation that holds between -er (than) and as . . . (as) constructions as one of 'inverseness'.
