Hulstifn (this volume) has presented a comparison of two theoretical approaches to language learning which he labels 'information-processing' and 'Analysis/Control'. This paper is a reply to some of the issues he raises in that critique. The argument is that, by presenting the two theories dichotomously, he has obscured their fundamental similarity as information-processing theories and misrepresented details of both positions. A response to his discussion of the 'Analysis/Control approach' is presented.
