Isi artikel
The contrastive analysis of Hebrew and English dress and cooking verbs and their noun/object collocations provides the basis for a series of generalizations particularly relevant for second and foreign language learning. These are subsumed under an open/close model of language activity that contrasts the automatic patterned aspect with its creative, meaningful counterpart. This contrast is similarly seen to pervade the host of familiar psychosociolinguistic and situational factors that influence the behaviour of both native and foreign users of language. The collocational behaviour of the Hebrew verbs described lends support to a mixed 'memory/meaning' rather than totally semantic explanation of selection restrictions. It is suggested that this linguistic analysis lends support for the adoption in the context of language learning pedagogy of a mixture of rote and cognitive strategies.
