Abstract
WebEC is an electronic commerce web benchmark that measures the performance of an e-commerce web site. The thesis proposes the WebEC benchmark specification for an e-commerce web application based on an electronic commerce broker model. The specification uses a single business model, the e-broker model. The model consists of activities such as online consultation of the business' suppliers' databases, selection of the supplier with the least cost or shortest delivery time and delivery from the supplier to the consumer through another third-party delivery channel (e.g, Fedex, UPS). The browser is incorporated in the definition of the buy transaction where delivery is not deferred, and hence included in the System Under Test (SUT). Internet security protocols (e.g. SSL) and payment protocol (e.g. VISA on-line) are included in the business transactions of the implementation and in the benchmark specification and results disclosure reports. The standard performance metrics are response time and throughput for on line transaction processing transactions of the WebEC benchmark. Based on the WebEC benchmark specification, an example implementation is provided based on the Microsoft Active Server pages web platform. Test results have been collected by running the WebEC benchmark application on a specific software and hardware platform. Tests include exercising factors such as number of users, think and key times, and workload characteristics. The workload characteristics are the required minimum percentage of mix for each transaction type operating over the measurement interval. The standard format for disclosure of the e-commerce benchmark results is presented according to (TPC 1997) disclosure format. The results of the e-commerce web benchmark on the Microsoft platform have not been published in previous literature, and will thus be of interest to the benchmarking community as well as the stakeholders in the technology.
