Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe the learning experiences of Malaysian firms that are currently moving towards globalization. Specifically the study sought to determine the knowledge the executives required for globalization; the ways individual executives learned; and the ways information was shared and disseminated within the organization. The researcher conducted case studies on two Malaysian firms that were reputed as having significant investment in other countries. Data were collected primarily through interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. Four senior executives from each company were interviewed using the snowball selection method. The researcher used the constant comparative technique to determine themes for subsequent interviews. Documents such as company annual reports, brochures, and newsletters were also collected. The researcher also used the companies' websites to collect information about the companies' history and business activities. A within-case and a cross-case analysis of the data were conducted. Five aspects of globalization knowledge emerged from the study. The knowledge required for the globalization of Malaysian firms were: Technical and industry; Management; Foreign culture; partner relations; and a global mindset. The study also determined that executives learned through experience, scanning and networking. Finally, personal interaction, formal training and conferences, and organizational mechanisms were used to share and disseminate information about globalization within the companies. Three conclusions were drawn from the study. First, Malaysian companies adopted similar approaches to globalization as other MNCs. Second, the learning practices of executives at the two globalizing Malaysian companies do not vary from those found in the literature. Finally, the company's history influences the learning culture of the company.
