Environmental concerns arise from all life cycle stages of the portland cement manufacturing process. They include land and habitat loss from mining activities, air and water quality degradation from material acquisition and manufacturing, land use and water disposal of waste materials, and energy consumption in all life cycle stages of portland cement manufacturing, especially the pyroprocessing stage. In fact, the portland cement industry is one of the top five largest energy consuming industries among all of the industrial activities in the world. Obviously, the major side effect of the energy consumption is CO 2 emission to the environment. Currently, considerable efforts regarding pollution control in industries, especially to combat global warming due to CO2 emissions, are focussed on the processes that are utilized by portland cement manufacturers. Additionally, portland cement manufacturing releases other pollutants such as particulates, air and water pollutants, and harmful gases to the environment. In light of these environmental concerns, the goal of this research is to (1) identify sources of environmental burden due to the current manufacturing practices, (2) to understand underlying reasons for utilization of different cement manufacturing technologies, (3) to provide an economically feasible framework for management decision making approaches towards environmentally friendly portland cement production. The comparison between alternative portland cement manufacturing techniques could help global efforts for environmentally conscious portland cement manufacturing.
