Abstract
A survey of 513 rural mental health counselors was conducted to investigate the following questions: what is the relationship between professional burnout and social support among rural mental health counselors? is it possible to predict types of burnout from measures of social support? do the three burnout groups (low risk, moderate risk, high risk) differ with regard to social support? do the three sources of social support (supervisors, coworkers, family/friends) differ with regard to the types of social support? what are the relationships between burnout, and the characteristics related to practitioner (gender, age, ethnicity) and work setting (years of experience, client contact hours, private vs. public agency)? does social support mediate the effects of occupational stress on burnout? Results of the study indicated: (a) greater burnout was associated with diminishing social support; (b) of the six types of social support, social integration and opportunity for nurturance were significant predictors of emotional exhaustion, reliable alliance was a significant predictor of depersonalization, and social integration was a significant predictor of low sense of personal accomplishment; (c) of the six types of social support, deficits in guidance, reassurance of worth, social integration, and attachment were associated with high risk for burnout; (d) the social support received from family/friends was significantly greater than the social support received from either supervisor or coworkers; (e) male counselors experienced greater depersonalization than female counselors; as age increases all three dimensions of burnout diminish; as years of experience increase emotional exhaustion decreases; as client contact hours increase a low sense of personal accomplishment increases; analyses could not be completed on ethnicity and private vs. public agency due to inadequate sample of non-white subjects and private practice subjects; (f) there was no evidence of a buffering effect even though a main effect was found for occupational stress and social support with regard to low sense of personal accomplishment. This research has implications for counseling faculty, supervisors in agencies, and clinicians/coworkers with regard to improving the training of rural counselors. Improvements in training may have a beneficial effect on recruitment and retention of counselors in underserved rural areas.
