Abstract
This study explored the communication behaviors between students with disabilities, their instructor, and peers in a distance education classroom. Focus of the study centered around the types of interactions which occurred and how distance technologies supported the learning of students with disabilities. The data suggested the access to education and equitable opportunities for learning are enhanced through the use of assistive technology. The accessibility to education and specific courses through distance learning provided an opportunity to an education which may not have been available due to geographical distances or physical limitations. The opportunity to receive an education empowered the individual with a disability to become an active member of their classroom community through social interactive experiences. Even though all participants stated a feeling of disconnection from peers at remote locations, the level of learning community that was created were considered by participants as a vital component to their educational experience. The data also suggested significant differences in topics of casual conversation between individuals with and without disabilities. In addition, the presence of off task behaviors when the instructor was not present, presented some learning difficulties for students with disabilities.
