Abstract
Since polymerizations of methacrylate esters and acrylate esters conducted in the presence of organocobalt compounds occur quite differently, the photochemical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with ethyl acrylate in the presence of various concentrations of isopropyl(pyridinato)cobaloxime was investigated. Monomer consumption was measured by gas chromatography as a function of total monomer conversion and the results were analyzed by the Mortimer-Tidwell method to obtain apparent reactivity ratios for the copolymerization systems. The reactivity ratios for methyl methacrylate in these systems decreased as the amount of organocobalt compound was increased. Numerical simulation of the copolymerization reactions indicated that this effect was probably due to reinitiation reactions that follow catalytic chain transfer reactions involving propagating methyl methacrylate radicals. These reactions appear to be less selective than the reactions of propagating methyl methacrylate radicals with monomers. Simulated results were in excellent agreement with residual monomer concentration data for experiments that employed an appreciable range of organocobalt concentrations. For a given organocobalt concentration, the average degree of polymerization decreased as the initial methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate ratio increased, a result consistent with a process involving pseudo-living copolymerization accompanied by catalytic chain transfer.
