Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if employees in organizations residing in the same geographically segmented area have similar cultural-gaps. Culture-gaps are defined as the difference between the actual norms in use and stated ideal norms within an organization. Kilmann (1984) found that actual cultural norms in use in an organization usually differ from the stated ideal norms as perceived by employees. This research studied this relationship between the actual norms in use and ideal norms across organizations within a geographically segmented population. To examine this issue, the Kilmann-Saxton Culture-Gap Survey
TM
(KSCG), developed and validated by Kilmann and Saxton (1983) was used. Three hundred seventeen respondents completed the KSCG survey at five locations within a large metropolitan area in the southwestern U.S. The results of this study show individuals working in similar companies in the same geographical locations do not necessarily have the same cultural norms. The results further indicate culture-gaps existed within the groups comprising the locations studied, and some locations did show significant culture-gaps within their populations, but no significance was found at the aggregate metropolitan level. The study concluded that culture-gaps, even at the lower group levels, could impact the decision of some companies in choosing a location for their operations in the geographical region that was studied.
