Abstract
I purpose of this interdisciplinary case study was to develop a process of adult collaborative learning and problem solving that would result in increased productivity and job satisfaction in high technology workgroups and that could be used by other managers and workgroups as well. The participant observer was the line manager of the workgroup in a telecommunications company Central Office. Using group sessions to identify problem areas and shared learning sessions to explore those areas over 16 weeks the group developed mutual trust and sharing, and began to talk among themselves for new learning and problem solving. The productivity increased 35% the overtime went down producing an annual saving of over $140,000 for the company, and the stress levels of the workgroup and the manager eased considerably. The study demonstrates that attention to adult learning models, and the creation of a collaborative learning environment, can be a particularly helpful strategy for managing technical workgroups faced with constantly changing technologies and corporate priorities.
