Abstract
This study examined the relationship between locus of control orientation, defense style, perceptions of parenting style, parental discipline practices and emotional autonomy. Data were collected from female junior and senior high school students (n = 98) attending a parochial high school in a suburban town outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Subjects completed five self-report measures and a demographic questionnaire. Statistical procedures included correlational and multiple regression analyses and factor analysis. Findings from the analyses yielded results that diverged significantly from predictions. Adolescent girls who reported an external orientation, who showed the use of lower order defense mechanisms and who rated their parents as using authoritarian parenting demonstrated higher levels of emotional autonomy, as measured by Steinberg and Silverberg's (1986) Emotional Autonomy scale. Furthermore, girls who perceived their parents to use authoritarian-parenting practices also reported receiving physical punishment as part of their discipline. Factor analysis of the Discipline Questionnaire revealed two factors. Factor I named Verbal and Physical Assaults was associated with authoritarian parenting, while Factor II called Verbal Rationalization, was linked to authoritative parenting by mothers. Additional analyses of the predictor variables reinforced the overall patterns of findings observed within the sample population. There has been some debate as to whether Steinberg and Silverberg's scale is a measure of healthy autonomy in adolescence or a measure of detachment from parents (Ryan & Lynch, 1989). The results of this study indicate the need to investigate and refine the varying definitions and conceptualizations of autonomy so that the diagnosis of adolescent girls' problems can be more precise and the method of treatment more effective.
