Abstract
This study investigated the implications of various approaches to parenting for child psychological adjustment given the presence of maternal depression. Parenting styles were assessed in terms of parental control and warmth. Four parenting styles were expected to emerge from the current data: authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent permissive and neglectful-permissive. It was hypothesized that an authoritative parenting style would be associated with better psychological adjustment for all children in comparison to the other parenting styles, Sons of depressed mothers were expected to demonstrate poorer psychological adjustment than the sons of nondepressed mothers. It was also hypothesized that the authoritative parenting style would be associated with the best outcome in child adjustment for boys of depressed mothers. Participants were 93 boys, between the ages of 8–0 and 12–11 years old, and their respective mothers. Measures included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Rush, Shaw & Emery, 1979), the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire-Control (PARQ - Control; Rohner, 1976, 1997) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach, 1991). Three parenting styles were found within the current sample: authoritative, indulgent-permissive and neglectful-permissive. Mean differences between groups, according to the hypotheses, were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test on the dependent measures of child psychological adjustment. Significant differences were not found between the authoritative parenting style and other parenting styles in terms of psychological adjustment when all boys were considered. However, when looking only at the parenting styles of depressed mothers, significant differences were found with regard to the CBCL Social Problems Scale. Boys of depressed-authoritative mothers demonstrated fewer socializing problems than boys of depressed-indulgent and depressed-neglectful mothers combined. Significant differences were also found between the depressed and nondepressed groups in terms of psychological adjustment of the boys. Boys of depressed mothers demonstrated more internalizing symptoms, including withdrawal, somatic complaints and anxiety/depression, than boys of nondepressed mothers.
