Abstract
Research shows that parents' behaviors influence their students' high school grades, but the reasons for the relationship have not been previously explained from a school perspective. This study adds an educational component to the parenting style research. A sample of 128 tenth graders from a predominantly white Milwaukee-area high school completed the survey from Dombusch, Ritter, Leiderman, Roberts, and Fraleigh (1987) and also indicated their parents' level of education. Academic teachers (3 for each student) reported students' grades in their classes and evaluated the students on 7 competencies: facilitative of others' work, skillful at problem solving, self-motivated, self-controlled, self-reliant, has dispositions appropriate to the classroom, and makes choices appropriate for the classroom. Regression analyses showed that student grades and the seven student competencies were highly related with each other. Neither grades nor student competencies were related significantly with parent education levels, but both were negatively and significantly related to authoritarian parenting. Results suggest that parents whose children describe them as authoritarian (controlling and punitive without flexibility) tend to have students who receive low grades and whose teachers perceive them to lack in some classroom competencies necessary to achieve at a high level. Analyses showed that authoritarian parenting explained 21% of variance in grades, a variance which was included in the 78% variance in grades explained by three competencies: problem solving, self-motivated, and makes appropriate choices.
