Abstract
Informal conversational data show that in contemporary Japanese pragmatic particles are a frequent device expressing the speaker's subjectivity. This dissertation focuses on a phenomenon in Japanese: morphemes that occur at the ends of so-called subordinate and embedded clauses may become utterance-final pragmatic particles when the following main clause is left unexpressed. The notion of grammaticization is useful in describing and explaining this phenomenon. Grammaticization is defined here as the process by which lexical items and constructions develop grammatical functions. Two detailed case studies are carried out on the following morphemes, which originally occurred at the ends of embedded clauses: wake, which was originally a noun meaning ‘reason’, and tte, which was originally a quotative complementizer. Analysis of 136 tokens of wake and 337 tokens of tte from the conversational portions of novels stretching from the 1780s to the 1990s reveals the gradual evolution of these morphemes into pragmatic particles in a collective and concrete fashion. The two case studies demonstrate that the process of “pragmatic particle-ization” is indeed an instance of grammaticization. The syntactic reanalysis of the embedded clauses as the main clauses, and pragmatic strengthening (i.e., the meaning of the morpheme becomes increasingly expressive, indicating the speaker's attitude) of clause-final morphemes are shown to be related processes. Other characteristic features of grammaticization are also found in the process of the pragmatic particle-ization of wake and tte, namely, unidirectionality of the change, subjectification, layering, persistence, and decategorization. The analysis of both synchronic and diachronic discourse data can provide a substantial account of pragmatic particle-ization and the growing elusiveness of the distinction between subordinate/embedded and main clauses in colloquial Japanese. Post-verbal, utterance-final position can be regarded as a grammaticized slot for expression of pragmatic information in Japanese, i.e., a slot that continues to expand by absorbing additional elements and assigning them pragmatic functions, as exemplified precisely by the evolution of wake and tte.
