Abstract
The evolution of the “Information Age” which has entailed increased investment in information technology by business enterprises throughout the United States has raised concerns involving whether this type of investment has led to corporate productivity and profitability. Existing studies have yielded contradictory results regarding this topic. This paper focuses on the idea that over time factors such as the addition of complimentary technologies consisting of advanced software applications and the internet may have augmented the positive impacts information technology has had on firm level productivity and profitability. This is illustrated by applying economic theory, in the form of a production function, to firm level data on investment expenditures on information technology over the more recent period of 1995–1997. My findings indicate that investment in IT at the firm level not only increases productivity but illustrates a growing trend in this relationship compared with results attained by similar analysis' conducted in earlier periods. Additionally, despite the simplicity of the modeling technique applied, this work has revealed that investment in information technology leads to profitability by enabling companies to minimize the costs of production. Therefore as the information age continues to evolve one could expect that businesses will continually utilize information technology in ways to enhance their efficiencies of production.
