Abstract
The central theme of this dissertation, stewardship, has been chosen after many years of talking with and listening to people in a variety of workplace environments, including local churches and mission organizations. The thesis presented begins with this central theme proposing that the concept of stewardship is a possible response to the tension, in a mission organization, between caring for its personnel and achieving its goals. This dissertation is an interpretive and reflective study that examines the people, product, and process of mission in a framework of organizational culture. The dissertation looks at the tensions between people and product through three lenses: (1) the lens of secular management theory; (2) the lens of a biblical theology of stewardship; and (3) the lens of historical development—the story of The Latin America Mission (LAM) as a positive case-in-point of a mission organization attempting to manage the tension. Having set the stage for the research in an introductory manner, Part One presents a careful methodology that looks to history and story for the illumination of organizational culture. In Part Two the dissertation examines the stories of the nation of Israel and the People of God as a biblical theology which seeks a structure for mission organizations by tracing the threads of stewardship woven through the Old and New Testaments. The study begins with Israel and the covenants of God that include the elements of integrity, wholeness, empowerment, and equipping. God asks the nation of Israel to be good stewards of the covenant. The dissertation concludes with a new model of organization for mission structures that is based on the principle of empowerment and the stewardship of human resources. The proposed model weaves the elements of biblical stewardship to form an organizational structure that has a solid christological center. This study concludes that the integration of stewardship with God's covenant agreement gives the People of God the foundation for their mission and ministry.
